How Do Neurons Sense a Spike Burst?
نویسنده
چکیده
In this issue of Neuron, Xu et al. (2012) show that knock down of Syt1, a major Ca(2+) sensor, impairs synaptic transmission similarly in different brain regions but with unexpected, region-specific behavioral outcomes.

Post-synaptic N-methyl-d-aspartate signalling in hippocampal neurons of rat: spillover increases the impact of each spike in a short burst discharge.
High-frequency burst discharges in hippocampus typically consist of less than ten spikes fired at frequencies too high to be followed by a post-synaptic neuron. How significant are these numbers for synaptic signalling? We have measured the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) component of the excitatory post-synaptic current (EPSC(NMDA)) in hippocampal CA1 neurons of rat after burst discharge of variab...
متن کاملCommentary: Burst Firing in a Motion-Sensitive Neural Pathway Correlates with Expansion Properties of Looming Objects That Evoke Avoidance Behaviors
What is the neural code? This essential question has been the driving force behind much research in sensory and motor neuroscience, spurring investigations of diverse animals, brain areas, and behaviors. Given that neurons generally transmit information with trains of voltage spikes, what information are these spikes representing, and how can they be interpreted? Do downstream neurons respond t...
متن کاملTemporal selectivity in midbrain electrosensory neurons identified by modal variation in active sensing.
Mormyrid weakly electric fish actively sense their surroundings by continuously emitting discrete pulses of electricity separated by varying intervals of silence. The temporal pattern of this pulsing behavior is related to context. While resting in the absence of an overt stimulus, baseline interpulse intervals (IPIs) mostly range 200-450 ms, and sequential variation is relatively high. Spontan...
متن کاملTransitions to synchrony in coupled bursting neurons.
Certain cells in the brain, for example, thalamic neurons during sleep, show spike-burst activity. We study such spike-burst neural activity and the transitions to a synchronized state using a model of coupled bursting neurons. In an electrically coupled network, we show that the increase of coupling strength increases incoherence first and then induces two different transitions to synchronized...
متن کاملFunctional Organization of the Cardiac Ganglion of the Lobster, Homarus americanus
External recording and stimulation, techniques were used to determine which neurons and interactions are essential for production of the periodic burst discharge in the lobster cardiac ganglion. Burst activity can be modulated by brief single shocks applied to the four small cells, but not by similar stimulation of the five large cells, suggesting that normally one or more small cells primarily...
